The unfashionable thing that nonetheless keeps people alive.
Sincerity has gone out of fashion — easy to read as naïve, threatening, or uncool — and yet it is what keeps people alive. To signal devotion plainly, against the pull of irony and the game, is unstylish and necessary in equal measure.
